In the Djula language Farafina Djarabi means the love of Africa to the people who live in the small West African nation of Burkina Faso. Formally known as Upper Volta, the country has a rich musical heritage, where for centuries, history and culture has been passed down through their music. Farafina, meaning literally 'land of the black skin' is also the name of the first group founded by balafon virtuoso Mahama Konate in 1978. The band played a historical role in the rise of world music appearing at the Montreux Jazz festival and later at Wembley Stadium to celebrate Nelson Mandelas 70th Birthday. They also went on to record with the Rolling Stones and Ryuichi Sakamoto.
