Kenny Ray Fairly was arrested in 1981 for robbing a woman in her car. A public defender talked him into accepting a plea bargain, and Kenny was sentenced to life in prison. Over the decades that followed, Kenny remained hopeful that one day he would gain his freedom. After learning of his plight, Debra Silverman and Ammi Brooks fought for 11 years to free Kenny. In 2008, after 27 years in prison, he was released on the same day Barack Obama accepted the Democratic Party nomination for president.
