Awkwardly mixing real-life testimony and archival footage with gauzy reenactments featuring many intense closeups of the actors, “Surviving D-Day” is finally worthwhile more for what it’s about than how it’s executed. It’s “CSI”-age flourishes notwithstanding — like using CGI to demonstrate how water slows down a bullet — this two-hour Discovery Channel documentary highlights the harrowing 12 hours on Omaha Beach. Although best viewed in concert with war movies like “Saving Private Ryan” or “Patton,” there’s enough here to merit a look.
